AC Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check Before You Call for AC Repair in Nevada

Warm air from the vents on a 110-degree day is scary, but a few of the most common causes are things you can check yourself in five minutes.

Start with the thermostat

Make sure it is set to Cool, the set point is below room temperature, and the fan is on Auto rather than On. Fan-on mode runs the blower constantly and blows room-temperature air between cooling cycles, which feels like the AC is not cooling.

Check the air filter

A clogged filter is the number one cause of an AC not blowing cold air in Nevada. Dust, pet hair and wildfire smoke load filters quickly here. If the filter is gray, replace it and give the system an hour.

Look for ice

Ice on the copper line or the indoor coil means airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low. Turn the system off (fan only is fine) to thaw it, and call for AC repair. Running a frozen system can wreck the compressor.

Check the breaker and the disconnect

AC systems have a breaker in the panel and a disconnect box at the outdoor unit. A tripped breaker that trips again after resetting points to an electrical fault, so stop there and call.

Is the outdoor unit running?

If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor fan does not, a failed capacitor or contactor is likely. These are fast, inexpensive fixes for a technician.

Is the outdoor unit clean?

Cottonwood fluff, dirt and dryer lint block the condenser coil and make the AC not cooling well. Gently rinse the fins from the inside out with a hose (power off).
