Why Is My AC Making Noise? Buzzing, Grinding, Clicking and Rattling Explained

Each sound points to a different part. Here is what they mean and which ones require shutting the system off immediately.

Buzzing

Usually electrical: a failing contactor or capacitor, or loose wiring. Also common when the fan motor is seized and the compressor tries to run.

Bearings in the fan or blower motor. Shut it off and call; a seized motor can take the compressor with it.

The contactor is pulling in but the compressor or fan is not starting. Often a capacitor.

Loose panel screws, debris in the condenser, or a failing compressor mount.
